Abstract (eng): A six month 5S project was launched in Metso Paper Järvenpää; in the rubber cover production unit in March 2011.
The goal was to raise the unit's productivity and overall performance through organizing, cleaning and standardizing work processes. 5S provides 5 systematical steps in raising performance through eliminating non-value adding activity on the factory floor level.
Additionally the model on sustaining the acquired level of cleanliness and orderliness should be set.
The background behind the project is the strive toward lean methodology in Metso operations.
Implementing 5S-methof in the Rubber Cover Production is the first leap towards a lean environment on factory floor.

This thesis documents the physical changes that were made during the project and the findings that help in creating better 5S projects in the future.
A goal for this thesis is to provide 5S-facilitators with methods for creating sustainable results.
Human factors playa large role in implementing lean manufacturing practices.
Hence much focus should be set on the campaigning, as well as the physical outcome after the project is finished.
The fixed safety risks and developments in the process during this project are the first step in taking the lean journey.
In the future the effort in sustaining the 5S-system requires the involvement of staff at all levels.
This step requires raising awareness in 5S-activity, the discipline in adhering the appointed responsibilities and leadership.
Abstract (fin): Metso Paper Järvenpään tehtaan telakumiointi yksikössä aloitettiin kuuden kuukauden 5S -tuotannonkehitysprojekti maaliskuussa 2011. 5S-menetelmä edesauttaa hukan ja turhan tekemisen poistamista tehtaan lattiatasolla.
Projektin tavoitteena on tehostaa tuotantoa järjestyksen, siisteyden ja työvaiheiden standardoinnin kautta sekä määrittää malli, jonka avulla saavutettu järjestys ja siisteys voidaan ylläpitää. tulevaisuudessa.
Projektin taustalla on Metson pyrkimys tehostettuun tuotantoon lean-toimintatavan avulla. 5S-menetelmän käyttöönotto on kumipinnoitusyksikön ensimmäinen askel lean-filosofian toteuttamisesta tehtaan tuotantotiloissa.

Tämä diplomityö dokumentoi 5S-projektin aikana tehdyt fyysiset muutokset.
Diplomityössä otetaan kantaa 5S-fasilitaattorin toimintamalleihin jotka edesauttavat 5S-menetelmän eteenpäin ajamista.
Inhimillisillä tekijöillä on suuri merkitys 5S-projektin toiminnan ylläpitämiseen.
