Abstract (eng): In mechanized forestry, harvesters have traditionally relied upon contact-based methods for measuring the dimensions of felled trees.
Optical measurement methods developed in the MetrixPro-project provide an opportunity for both more accurate measurements and monitoring the quality of the logs.
The aim of this master's thesis is to assess the financial benefits to the sawmill industry from adopting these new optical methods.

This thesis will focus on assessing the benefits of optical length measurement, rot detection, under bark diameter and the width of growth rings.
The assessment will be done by interviewing production managers of sawmills and running simulations with the MAS1-bucking simulator developed by Metsäteho.
Financial methods of assessing an investment's profitability will be applied to the results of the interviews and simulations.

The results show that optical length measurement could allow for the decreasing of the amount of trimming allowance.
This could have a significant financial impact on the forest industry.
Optical length measurement would also improve the accuracy of tree bucking, which would improve the availability of wood to the sawmill industry.
The quality measurements provided by a camera monitoring the end of the log were not found to have as strong financial benefits, although there was more potential for spruce sawmills than pine sawmills.
Abstract (fin): Koneellisessa puunkorjuussa hakkuukoneet ovat perinteisesti käyttäneet kosketukseen perustuvia menetelmiä kaadetun puun dimensioiden mittaukseen.
