Abstract (eng): | In this thesis we investigate the possibility to use WebSocket protocol to carry real-time media content. The purpose of this is to provide a fall-back solution for Web based real-time communication application which would normally use RTP over UDP to transfer the media. The need for fall-back mechanism raises form the fact that many clients wanting to establish a multimedia connection with other clients are located in such private networks that deny UDP traffic for security reasons. The application where the fall-back is implemented is based on new RTCWeb standard that defines protocols and interfaces for interactions between browsers natively inside the browser. The implementation uses WebSocket connection to transport RTP packets from the Web client to intermediate server which then forwards the packets to a peer client located in IP Multimedia Subsystem network. Measurements show that the delay that the packets experience in the WebSocket channel is minimal. Further evaluation between HTTP and WebSocket suitability for fall-back and their pros and cons reveal that it comes down to making a compromise between maximum availability for users in all possible network configurations and between performance that can be achieved. Choosing WebSocket for the fall-back means settling to the idea that it might not reach as many users in strictly managed networks as HTTP but would mean better performance for those it can serve. |
Abstract (fin): | Tässä diplomityössä tutkitaan mahdollisuutta käyttää WebSocket yhteyskäytäntöä reaaliaikaisen sisällön kuljettamiseen. |
