Abstract (eng): | During the past few years, the importance of credit risk management has increased due to tightened regulation and more severe financial implications. To determine the economic capital required for credit operations, the probability distribution and the Value-at-Risk of a credit portfolio need to be calculated. The objective of this thesis is to implement a credit Value-at-Risk model for the counterparty portfolio of Fortum Oyj in order to monitor its credit risk more actively. The credit VaR model is suitable for reporting relative changes in the credit portfolio on a monthly basis. The general scope of the model is to analyse changes in the portfolio structure or in the creditworthiness of some counterparties. First, the historical average default probabilities are attached to the external ratings. Recovery rates are modelled so that they are inversely proportional on the default probabilities. Second, the analytically solvable reduced form model CreditRisk+ and the structural simulation model two-state CreditMetrics are compared. Both models are implemented for the future credit risk management purposes. The CreditRisk+ model, in which default probability volatility and dependency structures arising from different domiciles and lines of businesses are included, is found to be the most appropriate for Fortum's counterparty portfolio. The data requirements are comparable with Fortum's database as well as Basel II. The model captures the concentration risk, which is the single most important individual source of risk. The results from the selected model are also robust from one month to another. |
Abstract (fin): | Viime vuosina luottoriskin hallinnasta on tullut yhä tärkeämpää kiristyneen sääntelyn ja epävakaiden taloudellisten olosuhteiden seurauksena. Vastapuoliriskin arvioimiseksi on syytä laskea tappiojakauman Value-at-Risk (VaR) ja odotettu tappio portfoliotasolla. Työn tavoitteena on toteuttaa luotto VaR-malli Fortum Oyj:n vastapuoliportfoliolle, jotta luottoriskin aktiivinen seuranta olisi helpompaa. VaR-malli sopii luottoportfolion suhteellisten muutosten kuukausitason raportointiin. Molemmat mallit implementoidaan tulevaa portfolio perusteista riskinhallintaa varten. |
