Abstract (eng): | In this master's thesis different options for small vessel electric propulsion are studied. Economic feasibility and cost structure of different electric propulsion options are compared to diesel mechanic propulsion. Rising oil prices and tightening emission regulations demand more energy efficient propulsion arrangements. Energy storages such as lead and lithium batteries enable to level the ship engine loads due to acceleration or idling. This leads to lower fuel consumption, less pollution and longer engine life. When energy storages are used it is possible to combine different energy sources like diesel generators, renewable energy and grid electricity. Fast-charged lithium batteries make it possible to use the grid electricity as the main energy source, which reduces fuel costs significantly. The cost structure of a 24-meter passenger vessel's diesel-mechanic propulsion was compared with the cost structure of hybrid propulsion and fully electric, grid-charged propulsion over a ten year period. Lead, lithium and natrium-nickel-chloride batteries were compared as options for hybrid propulsion energy storages. From all of the compared propulsion arrangements the diesel-mechanic propulsion had the highest total costs over the ten year period. The lowest total costs were achieved with the fully electric grid-charged propulsion, which had total costs 32% lower than the diesel-mechanic propulsion. On the other hand investment costs of the fully electric propulsion were 4,3 times higher than the investment costs of the diesel-mechanic propulsion. The total costs of the hybrid propulsion with different battery options were lower than the total costs of the diesel-mechanic propulsion, but higher than the total costs of the fully electric propulsion. The investment payback time in the compared propulsion options was between five and seven years. If the difference between the price of diesel fuel and grid electricity stays on the current level and the cost of fast-charged lithium batteries goes down, the fully electric propulsion will be a very feasible option for vessels operating on short routes. |
Abstract (fin): | Tässä diplomityössä tutkitaan pienalusten sähköisten propulsiojärjestelmien toteuttamisvaihtoehtoja teknisestä ja taloudellisesta näkökulmasta. Öljypohjaisten polttoaineiden jatkuva hinnan nousu ja päästörajoitusten kiristyminen motivoivat tutkimaan vaihtoehtoisia, energiaa säästäviä propulsioratkaisuja. Energiavarastot, kuten lyijy- ja litium-akut, mahdollistavat esimerkiksi aluksen kiihdytyksen aiheuttamien moottorin kuormapiikkien tasaamisen tai tyhjäkäynnin poistamiseen. Tätä kautta energiavarastot pienentävät polttoaineen kulutusta, vähentävät päästöjä sekä pidentävät dieselmoottoreiden elinikää. Kun energiavarastoa käytetään kuormien tasaamiseen, voidaan yhdistää useampien energianlähteiden kuten dieselgeneraattoreiden, uusiutuvien energianlähteiden tai verkkovirran käyttöä. Pikaladattavat litium-akustot mahdollistavat edullisen verkkovirran käytön ainoana energianlähteenä. 24-metrisen matkustaja-aluksen diesel-mekaanisen propulsion kustannusrakennetta verrattiin hybridipropulsioon sekä täysin sähköiseen, verkkovirrasta ladattavalla akustolla toimivaan propulsioon kymmenen vuoden ajalla. Hybridipropulsion osalta verrattiin kolmea eri akkutyyppiä: litium-akkuja, lyijyakkuja sekä Natrium-nikkelikloridiakkuja. Diesel-mekaanisen propulsion kokonaiskustannukset kymmenen vuoden aikana olivat korkeimmat. Kokonaiskustannuksiltaan edullisimmaksi propulsiovaihtoehdoksi osoittautui verkkovirralla ladattava täysin sähköinen propulsio, jolla oli n. 32 % pienemmät kokonaiskustannukset kuin kalleimmalla diesel-mekaanisella propulsiolla. Toisaalta täysin sähköisen propulsion investointikustannus oli noin 4,3-kertainen diesel-mekaaniseen propulsioon verrattuna. Hybridipropulsio eri akkutyypeillä sijoittui kokonaiskustannuksiltaan diesel-mekaanisen ja täysin sähköisen propulsion välille. Investointien takaisinmaksuajat vaihtelivat 5-7 vuoden välillä. Mikäli diesel-polttoaineiden ja verkkosähkön hintaero pysyy nykyisellään ja pikaladattavien akustojen hinnat laskevat, on täysin sähköinen propulsio houkutteleva vaihtoehto lyhyillä reiteillä liikkuville aluksille. |
