Abstract (eng):The purpose of this work is to develop a concept for safe torque off function that is used to ensure the safe state of an inverter emergency stop.
The work concentrates on alternating current motor inverters.
The theoretical background presented includes the basic knowledge of reliability engineering, functional safety, frequency converters and field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA).
The work has been commissioned by the department of High Power Drives of ABB Oy.

A major target of this work is to design a safe torque off concept that can be implemented into both two and three-level inverter topologies and their parallel connections.
Six different safe torque off concepts are presented and compared by the analytic hierarchy process (AHP).
Concepts' reliability and functional safety capabilities are assessed with failure modes, effects and diagnostics analysis (FMEDA).

Finally, a safe torque off concept fulfilling the requirements with safety integrity level SIL 3 and performance level PL e capability is presented.
Within the requirements given, the best results were obtained with those concepts that were implemented using field-programmable gate arrays in the safe torque off logic circuit.
Abstract (fin):Työn tarkoituksena on kehittää safe torque off€ -konsept, jota käytetään vaihtovirta-moottorikäytön invertterin hätäpysäytyksen turvallisen tilan varmistamiseen.

Vaatimukset parhaiten täyttäviksi konsepteiksi todettiin ne, joissa osa safe torque off -toiminnon logiikasta on toteutettu porttimatriisipiireillä.
