Abstract (eng): | Elevators and escalators are important elements of modern buildings. Furthermore, monitoring and control systems for elevators and escalators are closely related to other building automation systems. Consequently, making these monitoring and control systems interoperable with other building automation are an ongoing challenge in the elevator and escalator business. This thesis discusses a distributed monitoring and control system for elevators and escalators which is being developed by KONE Corporation. The system relies on the open OPC (Object Linking and Embedding for Process Control) standard to provide interoperability with other automation systems. The purpose of this thesis is to present a design for how relay elevators and escalators can be connected to this new system via a field bus which is based on the LonWorks technology. That is, the field bus level communications of the system are addressed. The thesis starts by presenting the OPC and LonWorks technologies. The actual communications design for relay elevators and escalators considers the structure of the field bus, the data flow transmitted via it and a network driver that is able to interface with the OPC level of the system. In addition, the suitability of the LonWorks technology for transmitting real-time data is evaluated with the help of simulations. It is concluded that the LonWorks technology is able to suit the application in question if limitations (the maximum number of nodes, the allowable transmission rate) to the utilisation of the field bus are set. All in all, the thesis presents an example of how proprietary field bus systems can be made open with the help of the OPC standard. It also points out design issues that must be taken into account when designing systems with the LonWorks technology. |
