Abstract (eng): | The playground equipment children play with is designed by adults. The equipment seems to have a good usability, but do children agree? In my master's thesis 1 pose the following questions: does the equipment in playgrounds have a good usability and how collect and analyse the received data. Firstly I define the concepts of play, usability and usability testing with children. Play isn't just something random children do. It is the civil right of every child defined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Secondly my aim is to discuss the gap between general usability and specific usability for children I also introduce usability testing with children. I mainly used the methods of quality research. I found that the best way to do usability research with children was to use observing methods. My observing method was to spend time at a playground watching children play and note down my observations. The results are introduced using five children's usability attributes: physical, social, creativity, fun and play ability. I end my thesis with the conclusion that playground equipment has a good usability but there is room for development. I also bring forth some thoughts on children's general status in the adult world and make some suggestions to designers. |
Abstract (fin): | Lapset leikkivät aikuisten suunnittelemilla leikkipuistovälineillä. |
