Abstract (eng): In metro traffic and especially during the braking of the trains large amounts of peak power is generated and needs to be stored for re-usage which can be challenging.
The intention of this master's thesis is to research the different possibilities to reuse regenerative braking power in the Helsinki Metro System.
This study has a present-day need as the Helsinki Metro is expanding to Espoo and Länsimetro is currently being built.

In this master's thesis the study was conducted by measuring the braking currents and how much of the heat generated by the brake resistors is used warming up the passenger cabin.
The result gives an overview of how much braking energy can be used again.
Supercapasitors and flywheels are studied in this thesis as a means to store energy before it is used again for the acceleration of another train.
The main goal was to investigate which would be the most efficient and also most economical way to reuse regenerative braking power.

The amount of extra and therefor reusable braking energy that was generated was calculated from the braking current measurements.
The result was 39 %.
Abstract (fin): Metroliikennöinnissä jarrutuksessa syntyy suuria tehoja ja tehohuippujen varastointi sekä uudelleenkäyttö on haasteellista.
Tämän diplomityön tavoite on tutkia erilaisia mahdollisuuksia hyödyntää jarrutusenergiaa Helsingin metroliikenteessä.

Jarrutusenergian osalta tulokseksi saatiin 39 %.
