Abstract (eng): | Increasing amount of wind power emphasizes the need to model the dynamic properties of wind power plants in the power system planning. However, the detailed models developed by wind power plant manufacturers are typically not suitable for this due to their excessive complexity and difficult maintainability. To address this issue, the standardizing organizations and other societies in the field of electrical engineering have developed generic wind power plant models. By changing the model parameters, the generic models can be used to represent the relevant dynamic properties of different types of wind power plants. This thesis evaluates the feasibility of a second generation generic variable-speed wind power plant model developed by WECC (Western Electricity Coordinating Council) for power system planning. First, the general properties of the model and especially the adjustability of voltage control was examined considering the Finnish specifications for the operational performance of wind power plants. After this, the performance of the model was evaluated in various simulations imitating typical power system planning cases. In conclusion, the performance of the generic model was found consistent and no numeric or usability issues typical for the previous versions of the model appeared. Based on the results, the model parameters can be set versatilely implying that the model is applicable to long-term power system planning and probably also to more detailed studies of wind power plants. However, it is advisable to study the characteristics of manufacturer-specific wind power plant models before introducing the generic model to the power system planning. In addition, user needs to consider the simplifications in the model implementation when using the model and especially when selecting the current limiter settings for it. Finally, the results also highlight further questions related to the principles of aggregation, validation, and the voltage control parametrization of wind power plant models. |
Abstract (fin): | Tuulivoiman osuus sähköntuotannosta on kasvussa, mikä lisää tarvetta mallintaa tuulivoimalaitosten dynaamista käyttäytymistä voimajärjestelmän suunnittelulaskennassa. Ennen mallin käyttöönottoa on kuitenkin suositeltavaa tutustua valmistajakohtaisiin malleihin, jotta yleisen mallin parametrien soveltuvuudesta voidaan varmistua. |
