Reading digital theses in the closed network of the Aalto University Harald Herlin Learning Centre

You can read theses on the Learning Centre customer computers, which are available on all floors.

Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): National research and innovation policy contributes to nations' international success.
In order to support chances for success, many countries have increased their research and development expenditures.
A part of the additional expenditures has been directed to universities whose funding in Finland has been mainly based on basic funding from ministries.
To increase the quality and eciency of academic research, an increasing amount of government funding has been channelled to funding organizations who have granted funding to research groups on competitive basis.
The funding of university research groups is increasingly based on resources acquired competitively from external funding sources.

This Thesis examines interrelationships between university research groups and their funding sources.
Additionally, it provides evidence of research groups' use of work effort on acquisition, reporting and use of external funding.
A funding source is here defined as an organisation from which research groups can acquire resources for their research activities.
To compare funding sources two frameworks based on cost-eciency analysis are constructed.
The first framework is a comprehensive input-output model where research groups' work efforts are inputs.
Outputs are groups' educational and scientific outputs.
The second framework examines how much work effort research groups spend on attracting and using external funding.

The methodology is used in the analysis of funding sources for Finnish universities.
The data is collected from research group leaders representing eleven scientific disciplines.
The results suggest that the output profiles of funding sources differ and that on average a third of research groups leaders' work effort is spent on the acquisition and administration of external funding.
Abstract (fin): Kansallinen tutkimus- ja innovaatiopolitiikka myötävaikuttaa maiden kansainväliseen menestymiseen.
Menestysedellytysten tukemiseksi useat maat ovat lisänneet tutkimus- ja kehitysmenojaan.
Osa lisäpanostuksista on suunnattu yliopistoille, joiden resursointi on Suomessa pääosin perustunut ministeriöiltä saatavaan perusrahoitukseen.
Tutkimuksen laadun ja tehokkuuden parantamiseksi kasvava osa julkisesta resursoinnista on suunnattu erillisille rahoittajaorganisaatioille, jotka ovat myöntäneet rahoitusta tutkimusryhmille kilpailutuksen perusteella.
Yliopistotutkimusryhmien rahoitus perustuukin enenevässä määrin ulkopuolisista lähteistä haettavaan, kilpailutettuun rahoitukseen.

Tämän työn tavoitteena on tarkastella yliopistotutkimusryhmien ja rahoituskanavien yhteyksiä ja valottaa tutkimusryhmien työpanoksen käyttöä ulkopuolisen rahoituksen hankintaan, hallinnointiin ja käyttöön.
Rahoituskanavalla tarkoitetaan tässä tahoa, jolta tutkimusryhmät voivat hakea resursseja tutkimustyöhönsä.
Rahoituskanavien vertailemiseksi työssä kehitetään kaksi kustannustehokkuusanalyysiin perustuvaa menetelmää.
Ensimmäinen menetelmä on kokonaisvaltainen panostuotos -menetelmä, jossa panoksia ovat tutkimusryhmien jäsenten työpanokset.
Tuotoksia puolestaan ovat tutkimusryhmien aikaansaamat koulutukselliset ja tutkimukselliset tulokset.
Toinen menetelmä tarkastelee tutkimusryhmien ulkopuolisen rahoituksen hankintaan ja käyttöön käyttämiä työpanoksia.

Kehitetyillä menetelmillä analysoidaan Suomen yliopistojen rahoituskanavia.
Aineisto kerätään tutkimusryhmien johtajilta yhdeltätoista tutkimusalalta.
Tulokset osoittavat, että rahoituskanavien tuotosproileissa on eroja ja että keskimäärin noin kolmasosa tutkimusryhmien johtajien työpanoksesta kuluu ulkopuolisen rahoituksen hankintaan ja hallinnointiin.
