Abstract (eng): | Mobile operators are in constant pressure to provide more capacity and services for their customers and simultaneously the price that customers are willing to pay for the transferred data is constantly decreasing. One viable technology to address these challenges is the Long Term Evolution (LTE), as defined by 3GPP. LTE will provide more network capacity with flatter all-IP architecture. Simplified network architecture together with standard interfaces and fewer protocols should decrease the cost of building networks. As the LTE network is based on all-IP architecture, the network is exposed to similar security threats as more traditional IP networks and thus similar counter measures need to be applied. Thesis investigates feasibility of utilizing more generic enterprise class security products in mobile operator networks, especially as a security gateway (SEG) in LTE's Enhanced Packet Core (EPC). Thesis work is carried out by literature study and by subject matter expert interviews. Based on the conducted study, security in the LTE networks cannot be neglected and to ensure service availability, operators should look for a security gateway that provides network facing security, robust Quality of Service and massive scalability. To be able to utilize enterprise class products successfully, these products would need to be scaled to meet core network demands and performance requirements, and need to be hardened to meet carrier-grade equipment requirements. |
Abstract (fin): | Kilpailukykynsä ylläpitämiseksi matkapuhelinoperaattorit joutuvat jatkuvasti tarjoamaan enemmän kapasiteettia ja palveluita asiakkailleen, ja samalla hinta, jonka asiakkaat ovat valmiita maksamaan tiedonsiirrosta, pienenee jatkuvasti. Yksi lupaavimmista teknologioista edellä mainittujen haasteiden ratkaisemiseksi on 3GPP:n määrittelemä Long Term Evolution (LTE). LTE tarjoaa lisää suorituskykyä täysin IP-protokollaan perustuvalla verkkoratkaisulla, jossa verkon arkkitehtuuria on merkittävästi yksinkertaistettu. |
