Abstract (eng):In this thesis it was studied how Finnish electrical, electronic and telecommunication product manufacturers take into account the environmental requirements of RoHS directive in their product development process and how the directive compliance information is managed in a value chain.

In the theory part of this thesis based on the literature study and interviews, some environmental requirements of European Union legislation are considered.
The viewpoints of the evaluation are effects caused for electrical and electronic products.
Also principals of environmentally oriented product design are presented.
Special attention is put to different ways to ensure the compliance according to the RoHS directive.

Six Finnish manufacturers of electrical, electronic and telecommunication products were interviewed for this study.
Interviewed companies represented different parts of the value chain: component manufacturers, distributors, manufacturing services and manufacturers of the end product.
The summary and analysis of the interviews and conclusions are presented in the empiric part.
Abstract (fin):Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin, miten sähkö-, elektroniikka- ja tietoliikennetekniikan yritykset huomioivat RoHS -direktiivin ympäristövaatimukset tuotesuunnittelussa ja miten direktiivin vaatimustenmukaisuuden osoittamiseen liittyvää informaatiota hallitaan arvoketjussa.

Tutkimuksen teoriaosuudessa esitellään Euroopan Unionissa voimaanastuvia sähkö- ja elektroniikkatuotteita koskevia ympäristövaatimuksia sekä ympäristömyötäistä tuotesuunnittelua.
Erityisesti siinä käsitellään RoHS -direktiivin vaatimustenmukaisuuden varmistamiseen liittyviä menettelyjä.

Tutkimuksessa haastateltiin kuutta suomalaista sähkö-, elektroniikka- ja tietoliikennetekniikan yritystä arvoketjun eri osista.
Haastatellut yritykset edustivat komponenttivalmistajia, osakokoonpanoteollisuutta, komponenttijakelijoita ja lopputuotteiden valmistajia.
Empiirisessä osassa esitetään haastattelujen yhteenvedot sekä haastattelujen perusteella tehdyt johtopäätökset.
