Portlet
Portal
Abstract (eng): Programming Java web applications is a major field in the current corporate development environment.
Portals built as Java-based web applications are a common way of providing aggregated content to all kinds of users.
In the enterprise environment, these can be for example internal employee portals or external portals used by the clients of the enterprise.

Writing these applications can be tedious due to for example the stateless nature of the communication technologies that are usually used to implement them.
JavaServer Faces is an emerging standard that is meant for building complex user interfaces at a higher level of abstraction from the underlying network communication that has been the norm.
It is about to become a part of the Java standards.
This has the potential of making web application development easier and faster.

This report evaluates the JavaServer Faces standard for use in a portlet based application environment by looking at a set of functionalities and the way they can be implemented with JavaServer Faces.
The work also included a prototype implementation of a JavaServer Faces compatible extension to a proprietary framework that supports portlet development.

The selected features had a solution with JavaServer Faces and especially the extendibility of the JavaServer Faces framework made custom solutions possible.
However, the conclusion is that a transfer to this new technology is not happening in the near future.
Abstract (fin): Java Web-sovellusten kehittäminen on oleellinen osa yrityksissä tapahtuvaa ohjelmistonkehitystä.
Java Web-sovelluksina kehitetyt portaalit ovat yleinen tapa tarjota useasta lähteestä peräisin olevaa informaatiota tai erilaisia palveluita eri käyttäjäryhmille.
Suuryritysympäristössä nämä voivat olla sisäisiä portaaleja työntekijöitä varten tai ulkoisia portaaleja yrityksen asiakkaita varten.

Näiden sovellusten kehittäminen voi olla varsin työlästä.
JavaServer Faces standardi määrittelee tekniikan, jonka on tarkoitus helpottaa erityisesti monimutkaisten käyttöliittymien luontia Java Web-sovelluksiin.
Sen tavoitteena on nostaa abstraktiotasoa ylemmäs kommunikointiin käytetyistä tekniikoista kuin mihin tällä alueella on totuttu.
JavaServer Faces tulee olemaan osa Java standardeja..

Tarkastellut toiminnallisuudet olivat toteutettavissa JavaServer Faces standardia käyttäen.
