Reading digital theses in the closed network of the Aalto University Harald Herlin Learning Centre

In the closed network of Learning Centre you can read digital and digitized theses not available in the open network.

The Learning Centre contact details and opening hours: https://learningcentre.aalto.fi/en/harald-herlin-learning-centre/

You can read theses on the Learning Centre customer computers, which are available on all floors.

Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.

Abstract (eng): This thesis studies different client side technologies that could be used for a driver's license e-learning site Vilkku.
Two different schemes are chosen into comparison: native browser implementation through HTML5 with JavaScript and Adobe Flash browser extension.
These are compared based on properties, performance and adaption.
The main areas of study include video playback capabilities and 2D graphics performance.
Findings are applied to an existing service Vilkku.

The results show that the rival native browser solution with HTML5 is not far behind Flash with features or performance.
The performance is heavily dependent on the browser vendor and version, but the major browsers are all capable for at least moderate 2D animation and the video playback performance is mainly up to hardware acceleration support.

If the implemented features are published in the near future, the technology choice falls on Adobe Flash due to high adoption level.
If the launch is targeted more than a year away, then the choice might switch to HTML5.
Abstract (fin): Tässä työssä vertaillaan eri tekniikoita, joita voitaisiin käyttää asiakaspuolen tekniikkana kuljettajantutkinnon teorian etäoppimispalvelussa.
Kaksi eri lähestymistapaa valitaan tarkempaan analyysiin; natiivi selain-implementointi käyttäen HTML5 kuvauskieltä JavaScriptin kanssa vastassaan Adoben Flash selainlaajennus.
Näitä vertaillaan ominaisuuksien ja suorituskyvyn näkökulmasta.
Tärkeimpinä tutkimustyön alueina voidaan pitää videon esittämisen ja 2D grafiikan esittämisen rajapintoja ja tehokkuutta.
Tuloksia tarkastellaan jo olemassa olevan Vilkku harjoittelupalvelun avulla.

Videon tehokkuus on erittäin vahvasti riippuvainen laitteistokiihdytyksen tuesta.

Jos palvelu lanseerattaisiin lähitulevaisuudessa, suosisi teknologian valinta Flashia sen jo olemassa olevan laajan tuen takia.
Mikäli julkistus olisi noin vuoden päässä, voisi valinta kääntyä HTML5:een.
