Abstract (eng): The objective of this thesis was to study the effects of thermal modification under saturated steam on Scots Pine (Pinus Sylvestris).
Furthermore as the process was conducted in a pressurised autoclave, the physical process itself had to be planned.
From the test results the phenomenon of increased degradation of wood material, in highly moist condition, was of interest.

The methods used for the thermal modification were acquired from a recently developed thermal modification method 'WTT Thermo Treatment' and a series of tests with the machinery used during this thesis.
The testing temperatures were chosen to be 120°C, 150 °C and 180°C which were believed to be the process temperatures.
In addition four initial sample moisture contents were chosen: 0 % MC, 12 % MC, and 18 % MC and soaked (-50 % MC) samples.

This process provides a good alternative to conventional thermal modification methods.
The process temperature is reduced noticeably (from over 200 °C to 150°C) which was due to increased thermal degradation.
Referring to mass loss, density decrease and impact strength the process was too mild at 120 °C and too severe at 180°C for all initial moisture contents.
The modification executed at 150 °C was successful and the effect of modification increased as the initial moisture content rose.
The bending strength of samples modified at 120°C and 150 °C were equal to literature values, but modification at 180°C reduced the value by half.
In addition the EMC diminished by 22 - 55 %.
Abstract (fin): Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena oli tutkia kylläisessä höyryssä toteutetun lämpökäsittelyn vaikutusta mäntyyn (Pinus Sylvestris).
Lämpökäsittelyn aikana tapahtuva korkeissa kosteuspitoisuuksissa johtuva kiihtynyt puun hajoaminen otettiin eritoten huomioon.

Lämpökäsittelymenetelmä 'WTT Thermo Treatment' on hiljattain kehitelty käsittelytekniikka, jonka prosessia käytettiin avuksi tämän tutkimuksen menetelmässä.

Lisäksi kosteustasapaino laski 22 55 %:a.
