Abstract (eng): | Pulse compression is a method to increase the energy of the transmitted radar signal without sacrificing the range resolution. It is commonly used in modern radars. In this thesis the classification of pulse compression radar waveforms is studied. The pulse compression waveforms examined are: linear frequency modulation (LFM), Costas, binary phase, Frank, P1, P2, P3, and P4 codes. A classification system for classifying the aforementioned waveforms is developed. Such systems have applications, e.g., in signal reconnaissance, radar emitter identification, and threat analysis. Extraction of features that convey significant information for the classification task is emphasized in this thesis. A large number of potential features from previously published literature on signal analysis are presented. These features stem, for instance, from instantaneous signal properties, as well as from second-and higher-order statistics. In addition, novel features based on the Choi-Williams time-frequency distribution are introduced. The final feature vectors are selected using a feature selection algorithm based on the mutual information between the classes and the features. The actual classifier developed in this work is comprised of two parallel classifiers both multilayer perceptron (MLP) networks. Three different models for the MLP networks are presented: ensemble averaging early-stop committee, and two Bayesian neural networks. The classifier performances are evaluated as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). The effect of the composition of the training data on the performance is studied as well. The overall correct classification rate of the classifiers is over 96 % in SNR of 6 dB on data similar to the training data. |
Abstract (fin): | Pulssikompressio on moderneissa tutkissa yleisesti käytetty menetelmä lisäämään lähetetyn tutkasignaalin energiaa uhraamatta etäisyysresoluutiota. Luokittimien suorituskyky evaluoidaan signaali-kohinasuhteen funktiona additiivisessa valkoisessa gaussisessa kohinassa. Myös opetusjoukon koostumuksen vaikutusta suorituskykyyn tutkitaan. Signaali-kohinasuhteella 6 dB luokittimien oikean luokittelun todennäköisyys on yli 96 % opetusjoukkoon verrattavissa olevalla datalla. |
