Abstract (eng):This thesis evaluated the possibilities to manufacture material handling equipment in low-cost countries. Purpose of this study was to find out whether it would be profitable to outsource manufacturing into low-cost-countries. The thesis was done from a viewpoint of global technology and equipment manufacturing company.

This thesis consists of literature review, data and information collection and price quotations from existing manufacturing networks and low-cost country suppliers. Literature review consists of theories and previous studies about subjects related to procurement, outsourcing and total cost calculations. Data and information was gathered in order to get real-life figures and experiences from seasoned sourcing and manufacturing experts. Total cost calculations were based on the quotations received for real items and products.

The most notable result was that the price of manufactured items can be a lot cheaper sourced from low-cost countries compared to same items' manufacturing costs in Finland. The price difference is mainly due to low labour costs in the low-cost countries. The cost gap narrows when other costs related to manufacturing are taken into consideration, but it can still be significantly more cost-effective to source these items from low-cost countries.

In order to successfully operate in low-cost countries many risks need to be noticed. The most Significant risks relate to protection of intellectual property rights and sustaining the wanted quality of products. It is also necessary to make careful preparations in order to successfully operate in low-cost countries.
Abstract (fin):Tässä työssä arvioitiin mahdollisuuksia materiaalinkäsittelylaitteiden valmistamiseen edullisemman hintatason maissa.

Onnistuneen toiminnan edellytys edullisemman hintatason maissa on riskien huomioonottaminen. Suurimmat riskit liittyvät tuotteiden immateriaalioikeuksien suojaamiseen ja halutun laatutason säilyttämiseen. Onnistunut toiminta edullisemman hintatason maissa edellyttää myös huolellisia valmisteluja.
