Abstract (eng): | In the recent years there have been two major trends on ICT industry: green computing and cloud computing. The first trend is related to climate change, which has been a major concern for general public and numerous governments. Due to the energy-intensive equipment, ICT industry has become a major source of CO2 emissions. In addition to positive impacts on environment, more energy-efficient solutions in install bases would also decline companies' operational costs. In the best case scenario, particularly energy-stingy solutions would even improve the competitiveness of companies. The second major trend makes it possible to purchase many traditional IT resources as a service, which typically has no upfront costs. Basically cloud computing consists of many existing technologies, but it has few unique features as well. It involves many benefits at business perspective, but there are also some drawbacks, such as privacy issues. Cloud computing paradigm is important on the green computing point of view, because it strives for extreme utilization of hosted IT resources. The combination of these major trends can be considered as green cloud computing. Both trends and their characteristics are described with detail in their own sections. The thesis also introduces three domestic companies, which have built their own versions of especially green data centers, and they offer different kinds of cloud services for companies as well. Furthermore, green cloud computing as a whole will be evaluated in its own sections. Based on the literature and conducted interviews, the best practices to implement green data centers will be proposed for companies, who still want to host their own services, and the greenest cloud solutions will be presented for those, who would like to outsource the maintenance of physical resources. The results point out that private clouds are the greenest option currently, especially when they are hosted within green data centers, which commonly use free cooling and exploit their waste heat. |
Pilvipalvelut mallina on tärkeä vihreän laskennan kannalta, sillä pilvipalvelut pyrkivät erittäin korkeisiin käyttöasteisiin. Näiden kahden trendin yhdistelmää voidaan kutsua vihreäksi pilvilaskennaksi. Molempien trendien luonteenomaisuudet kuvataan tarkasti omissa osioissaan. |
