Abstract (eng): | The amount of mobile data traffic varies during a day, and unpredictable events cause additional temporary load surges to the network cells. However, the traditional approach to scale up network capacity by deploying additional dedicated hardware to the network provides insufficient flexibility. A future approach to avoid investments to expensive, dedicated networking devices and increase flexibility is to virtualize their functions to software and provide them using a cloud platform on top of generic hardware. Virtualization decouples functionality from the hardware that provides it and cloud platforms automate virtualization management. Thus, increasing the network capacity will become effortless and different technologies, such as live migrations, support function movement across decentralized infrastructure. This thesis describes the construction of an OpenStack-based testbed on top of traditional computing equipment that permits the study of virtualized LTE core networks. In addition, the thesis studies the testbed network performance, live migration procedure feasibility for virtualized network functions, and the performance of a virtualized LTE core network built using open-source network functions via network packet captures. The work indicates that building an open-source, generic hardware cloud platform for a virtualized core network is feasible. The performance evaluation of our testbed and the virtualized core network indicates that they are compliant with the LTE-Advanced delay requirements. However, virtual machine live migrations cause unacceptable downtime to the virtualized functions. Possible solutions to the live migration problem include different live-migration algorithms and technologies, handling the state migration in the application level instead of migrating complete virtual machines, and the employment of application containers as a lighter form of virtualization. Furthermore, the thesis suggests the study of employing Software-Defined Networking technologies to control the testbed networks. |
Abstract (fin): | Mobiilin dataliikenteen määrä vaihtelee päivän aikana, ja ennalta-arvaamattomat tapahtumat luovat verkon soluihin kuormapiikkejä. |
