Abstract (eng): Vibrations in a paper machine are commonly recognized as serious problems in the process of papermaking.
One way to avoid or lessen these problems is by investing on new technology in order to enable the paper mill to operate as smoothly as possible.

Although the problem is recognized as being a substantial one, there is no clear knowledge on its magnitude.
Therefore, in order to assess the profitability of investments on new technology, it is necessary to define a set of measurement tools, with which the cost effects of vibrations can be measured.

The aim of this study is to produce such a set of measurement tools.
The basis of this study rests on OEE-model (Overall Equipment Effectiveness), which in turn is based on TPM-philosophy (Total Productive Maintenance).
In the OEE-model manufacturing efficiency is measured using three terms; availability (operating rate), performance rate and quality rate.
Great improvement, compared to most calculations standards used in paper industry, is the inclusion of performance rate, which is typically neglected while concentrating on losses caused by lack of availability or poor quality rate.
The lEE model is known in Finnish as KNL-model, the name of which derives from Finnish expression for the operating, performance and quality rates.

Although the OEE-model is originally developed for use in electronics industry, it has been successfully utilized in measuring paper mill effectiveness.
The main problem with measuring costs of vibrations is the difficulty of coupling problems with their causes.
This study attempts to define the correct measurement system for connecting costs to their causes.

As a result of this study, a new set of measurements named KNLvär was developed for measuring the cost effects of vibrations in papermaking process.
In addition a set of requirements for measurement was given, which should help in connecting costs to their underlying causes.

The set of measurements, as presented in this study, has not yet been implemented or tried out in practice, so the value and significance of the study remain unknown.
There are, however, no clear hindrances preventing the trying of the measurement system defined in this study.
Given that, at least a small-scale pilot-project utilizing the system given is recommended.
Abstract (fin): Paperikoneen värähtely tiedostetaan yleisesti merkittäväksi ongelmaksi paperinvalmistuksessa.

Näin ollen, jotta voitaisiin arvioida paperinvalmistuksen kehittämiseen suunnatuiden investointien kannattavuus, on välttämätöntä kehittää mittaristo ja määritellä mittausmenetelmät, joilla värähtelyn kustannukset pystytään edes summittaisella tasolla laskemaan.

Suurin ongelma värähtelykustannusten mittaamisessa on häiriöiden syiden kohdistamisen vaikeus.
