Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): Objective of this thesis was to examine the suitability of nip profile measurements to define paper roll's diameter and hardness profiles on paper machine.
These measurements were mainly done using a new kind of intelligent reel drum, iRoll, which is equipped with pressure sensitive EMFi-foils.
Through different kind of measurements it was intended to find the affects of reeling parameters and the characteristics of the reel drum to the nip profile measurements.
Same time the objective was to define the suitability of these measurements for paper quality control.

The basics of reeling and calandering technologies are described in theoretical part of the thesis.
Also the effect of EMFi films installations and soft roll covers are explained.
Practical measurements were carried out in Metso Paper's pilot-reel.
With these measurements it was intended to define the effect of reeling parameters (linear load, web tension, centrifugal force and speed) to profile measurements.
Profile measurements were also compared with several hardness meters, and laser-measuring device.

Based on the results linear load has a linear dependency to the profile measurements, the centrifugal force doesn't have any kind of dependency, the dependency of speed and web tension was irregular.
Comparisons to other measuring devices confirm that iRoll system can measure accurately the diameter profile and the hardness profile of machine roll.
It can only measure the shape of the profile without any absolute values.
Based on practical measurements iRoll is found suitable for paper quality control on on-line paper machine.
Abstract (fin): Diplomityön tavoitteena oli tutkia nippiprofiilimittausten soveltuvuutta paperirullien halkaisija- ja kovuusprofiilien mittaamiseen paperikoneella.
Nippiprofiilien mittauksessa käytettiin pääasiassa uudenlaista iRoll-älyrullaussylinteriä, joka on varustettu paineherkillä EMFi-kalvoilla.
Mittausten perusteella oli tarkoitus selvittää erilaisten rullausparametrien ja rullaussylinterin ominaisuuksien vaikutus nippiprofiileihin.
Samalla pyrittiin selvittämään mittausmenetelmien käyttökelpoisuus säätöjärjestelmän osana.

Työn teoreettisessa osassa käsitellään yleisesti rullaus- ja kalanterointiteknologiaa.
Älytelamittausten kannalta käsitellään lisäksi pehmeän telapinnoitteen ja EMFi-kalvojen asennuksen vaikutuksesta mittaustuloksiin.
Käytännön mittaukset suoritettiin koekoneympäristössä pilot-rullaimella.
Mittauksissa selvitettiin rullausparametrien (viivakuorma, ratakireys, kehävoima ja nopeus) vaikutus profiilimittauksiin.
Samalla selvitettiin erilaisin testein iRoll järjestelmän mittatarkkuutta ja erottelukykyä.
Tämän lisäksi profiilimittauksia vertailtiin usean kovuusmittarin ja laser-mittalaitteen tuloksiin.

Mittaustulosten perusteella rullausparametreista viivakuormalla oli lineaarinen riippuvuus profiilimittauksiin, kehävoimalla ei ollut riippuvuutta ollenkaan, nopeuden ja ratakireyden riippuvuus oli epäsäännöllinen.
Vertailut muihin mittalaitteisiin vahvistivat, että iRoll-järjestelmällä saadaan mitattua tarkasti rullan halkaisija- ja kovuusprofiilin muoto.
Käytännön mittausten perusteella voidaan sanoa, että iRoll-järjestelmä soveltuu paperikonelinjalle paperin laatusäätöjen mittalaitteeksi.
