Reading digital theses in the closed network of the Aalto University Harald Herlin Learning Centre

You can read theses on the Learning Centre customer computers, which are available on all floors.

Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): Basic data for manufacturing processes that use bio based raw materials were gathered as much as possible in this thesis.

In the literature part different bio based raw materials that are used in fuel production were examined.
Some pre-treatment methods for the raw materials were studied and some manufacturing methods for bio based fuels were investigated.
Lastly physical properties for processing bio based raw materials were introduced.

In the applied part physical properties for vegetable oil and animal fat components were searched from open literature.
Estimation methods for the physical properties were also researched.

There is not much data available for the required physical properties and some that were found are not applicable because of the different measurement conditions.
Several computational methods for the physical properties were found but often they were applicable only in some specific cases.
Missing data has to be measured in-house of bought as service from research institutions/companies making good quality measurements or bought from commercial data bases.
Since a lot of data needed, it is obvious that physical property estimation methods have to be used.
Abstract (fin): Diplomityön tavoitteena oli kartoittaa mahdollisimman laajalti ainearvotietoja suunniteltaessa bioperäisiä raaka-aineita käyttäviä valmistusprosesseja.

Kirjallisuusosassa tarkasteltiin erilaisia polttoaineiden valmistukseen soveltuvia bioperäisiä raaka-aineita.
Työssä tarkasteltiin raaka-aineiden esikäsittelymenetelmiä sekä eräitä bioperäisten polttoaineiden valmistusreittejä.
Lopuksi esiteltiin valmistusprosessin suunnittelussa tarvittavia aineominaisuuksia.

Soveltavassa osassa etsittiin kasviöljyjen ja eläinrasvojen sisältämien komponenttien perusaineominaisuustietoja.
Työssä tarkasteltiin myös aineominaisuustietojen estimointimenetelmiä.

Julkisesti saatavilla olevasta kirjallisuudesta haluttuja perusaineominaisuustietoja löytyi hyvin rajallisesti.
Joidenkin löydettyjen tietojen soveltaminen valmistusprosesseihin on haasteellista, johtuen erilaisista mittausolosuhteista.
Laskennallisia menetelmiä perusaineominaisuustietojen määrittämiseen löytyy useita, mutta ne monesti soveltuvat vain tietyille tapauksille.
Puuttuvat aineominaisuudet on mitattava itse, mittautettava tutkimuslaitoksilla tai mittauksiin erikoistuneilla yrityksillä tai hankittava maksullisista tietokannoista.
Koska mitattavaa on paljon, jouduttaneen kuitenkin prosessisuunnittelussa suurelta osin turvautumaan erilaisiin aineominaisuuksien estimointimenetelmiin.
