Abstract (eng): In this thesis the functioning and performance of several multimedia services in mobile networks are evaluated.
Because of the high dependence of the underlying mobile network to the service performance, the beginning of the study concentrates on the possibilities, challenges and problems of the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network.
In addition, the effects of the services to the mobile networks are evaluated.
The analysis is conducted by evaluating in the theoretical level the possible elements and factors that might have an effect on the multimedia service performance.
In addition, several measurements are carried out and compared to the theory.

The GPRS analysis of the study shows that GPRS is a difficult platform for interactive applications due to long network latency, high jitter, and low varying bandwidth.
Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) does not bring improvements on GPRS latency problem but Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) provides lower latency, and thus suits better for many services.

The measurements show that the tested Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) works properly and the delays are within the tolerable limits for a non-real-time messaging service.
Further, it can be seen that Photoshare can be a very effective way to share media between users.
The Push-to-talk over Cellular (PoC) measurements show that the tested IMS PoC system can quite easily achieve tolerable delay limits.
PoC can also be seen as a service that can strongly benefit from better QoS.
Abstract (fin): Tämän diplomityön tarkoitus on tutkia multimediapalvelujen suorituskykyä ja toimintaa pakettikytkentäisessä solukkoverkossa, GPRS:ssä.
Työn alussa paneudutaan GPRS-verkon mahdollisuuksiin, haasteisiin ja ongelmiin multimediapalvelujen alustana.
Lisäksi multimediapalvelujen vaikutus mobiiliverkkoon tutkitaan.
Analyysin pohjana on kirjallisuustutkimus, joka arvioi teoreettisella tasolla multimediapalvelujen suorituskykyyn mahdollisesti vaikuttavat tekijät.
Kokonaiskuva multimediapalvelujen suorituskyvystl1 saadaan vertailemalla mittaustuloksia kirjallisuustutkimuksen tuloksiin.
