Abstract (eng): | Cationic starch is a widely used chemical in papermaking. The adsorption of cationic polyelectrolyte, cationic starch (CS) on the anionic SiO2 surface has been studied with quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation, QCM-D instrument. The aim of this work is to understand the structure of adsorbed cationic starch layers, its dependence on the electrolyte concentration, polymer charge density and molecular weight distribution. The adsorbed layers of cationic starch were also modelled with theoretical simulations using a Voigt-based viscoelastic model. This quantitative interpretation gives data about the thickness, shear elastic modulus and shear viscosity of the film. The X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy, XPS, has been used as a quantitative verification method. Two markers for the CS were used; surface content of nitrogen and the relative abundance of C-O, i.e. carbon bonded only one oxygen atom. Three different kind of cationic starches were adsorbed on the anionic silica:. I) CS with low degree of substitution (DS) and high molecular weight (narrow Mw distribution). 2) CS with high DS and high molecular weight (broad Mw distribution). 3) CS with high DS and low molecular weight (narrow Mw distribution). Adsorption of CS depends on the charge density and electrolyte concentration in the expected way. Without added electrolyte CS adsorbs on the anionic silica in a very flat conformation. The formed layer is thin and rigid and the film thickness can be estimated using Sauerbrey equation. By increasing the electrolyte concentration the conformation of the polyelectrolyte is more coiled and more polymer fits on the surface. Although at high electrolyte concentrations where the electrostatic interactions should be screened, cationic starch still adsorbs on the negatively charged surface. When modelled by Voigt model the final thickness is about 7 nm for the low charged CS and -4.5 for highly charged CS. The XPS analysis supports well the QCM-D results. CS with narrow molecular weight distribution forms a more compact and rigid layer due to better packing of the molecules whereas CS with broad molecular weight distribution forms more loose and softer layer With higher water content. |
Abstract (fin): | Kationisen polyelektrolyytin, kationisen tärkkelyksen (CS) adsorptiota anioniselle SiO2-pinnalle tutkittiin kvartsikidemikrovaa'alla (QCM-D). Työn tarkoituksena on ymmärtää paremmin adsorboituneen tärkkelyskerroksen rakennetta ja rakenteen riippuvuutta elektrolyyttipitoisuudesta, polymeerin varaustiheydestä ja molekyylipainojakaumasta. Tärkkelyskerrosten ominaisuuksia mallinnettiin Voigt'n mallin avulla. XPS-analyysi tukee saatuja QCM-tuloksia. Tärkkelys, jonka molekyylipainojakauman muoto on kapea, muodostaa kovan ja tiiviin kerroksen. Polymeerit pääsevät muotonsa vuoksi pakkautumaan paremmin. Tärkkelys, jonka molekyylipainojakauma taas on leveämpi, muodostaa löyhemmän ja pehmeämmän kerroksen, jonka vesipitoisuus on korkeampi. |
