Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.

Abstract (eng):Although the need for integrative organisational mechanisms to align strategic practises and innovation practises is identified, more detailed descriptions of structures and processes that enable this are elided in literature.

This thesis proposes a conceptual model of the organisational processes that integrate strategy and product innovation practises.
The study is based on a cross-industry research of 30 companies conducted in 2004.
The objective of the paper is to present a context-dependent model of the interactions and integration structures of strategy and innovation practises.

The theoretical foundation of the research is in the evolutionary strategy theory.
Cases are analysed for integration processes, referring to processes that enable the top management, middle management and innovation personnel to interact regarding innovation and strategic activities.
Eight cases are taken into more detailed analysis and the preliminary conclusions are based on these and the rest 22 cases strengthen the empirical observations.
The research strategy is inductive case-study, and theory is generated through shaping synthesis based on the similarities of analysed processes and theoretical assumptions.

The emerged main themes of integration are 1) top management communication and decisions, 2) middle management strategic behaviour, 3) discussion between market needs and technological possibilities and 4) facilitation of innovation.
The results include taxonomy of eighteen organisational processes for integration and discussion on synthesis of evolutionary strategy theory and findings.
Three examples of these processes are correct management principles, such as allowance of slack, work of the steering group and idea structuring and selection done by the Chief Technology Officer.
The results are reflected in relation to different organisational contexts.
Abstract (fin):Vaikka tarve strategisten toimintojen ja innovaatiotoimintojen harmonisoinnille tunnistetaan, selkeät ja tarkat kuvaukset tämän mahdollistavista prosesseista ja rakenteista jätetään vähälle huomiolle kirjallisuudessa.

Tämä opinnäytetyö esittää käsitteellisen mallin siitä, minkälaisilla prosesseilla tuoteinnovaatiotoimintoja ja strategisia toimintoja voidaan integroida.
Työ perustuu vuonna 2004 tehtyyn tutkimukseen suomalaisista viiden eri toimialan yrityksistä.
Työn tavoitteena on kuvata kontekstiriippuvaisesti millaisia prosesseja yritykset käyttävät ohjatakseen tuotekehitystä ja innovaatiotoimintoja strategisen tahdon mukaisesti.

Työn teoreettinen pohja on evolutionary strategy -teoriassa.
Työ on tapaustutkimus, jossa tapaukset analysoidaan integraatioprosessien suhteen, mikä tarkoittaa niiden prosessien etsimistä jotka mahdollistavat johdon, keskijohdon ja tuotekehityksen henkilöstön vuorovaikutuksen innovaatio- ja strategiatoimintojen suhteen.
Kahdeksan tapausta analysoidaan syvällisemmin ja alustavat johtopäätökset tehdään näiden kahdeksan tapauksen pohjalta.
Loput 22 tapausta vahvistavat johtopäätöksiä empiirisillä havainnoilla.
Tutkimusstrategia on induktiivinen tapaustutkimus, ja teorian luovat synteesit pohjautuvat analysoitujen prosessien samanlaisuuksiin liitettynä teoreettisiin oletuksiin.

Teemat jotka muotoutuivat innovaation ja strategian pääteemoiksi ovat 1) ylimmän johdon kommunikaatio ja päätökset, 2) keskijohdon strateginen käytös, 3) organisaation keskustelu markkinatarpeista ja teknologisista mahdollisuuksista ja 4) innovaation mahdollistaminen.
Tulokset sisältävät kahdeksantoista organisatorisen prosessin jaottelun määrittelemään näiden teemojen sisällön, sekä synteesin teoriasta ja näistä integraatioprosesseista.
Löydettyjä integraatioprosesseja ovat esimerkiksi ohjausryhmän työskentely ja teknologiajohtajan tekemä ideoiden karsinta ja eteenpäin vieminen.
