Abstract (eng): | In this work, the fast ion loads in ITER were simulated using fully three-dimensional magnetic field and wall models. The 3D magnetic field module allows including toroidal magnetic ripple, which is predicted to pose a possible hazard to the wall materials in ITER. The wall model, on the other hand, allows simulating protruding wall elements, such as port limiters. The aim of the work was to determine which wall components bear the highest fast ion load, and whether the ripple can be compensated by ferritic inserts in both full-field and half-field operation. The work was done with ASCOT, a Monte Carlo code that follows charged particle guiding center orbits in tokamak geometry. The simulations consisted of 10 000 to 100 000 test particles, depending on the simulation. The total power load, power load per wall tile and peak power load density were calculated from the simulation results and presented. The wall loads due to fusion alpha particles, NBI ions and ICRF-accelerated ions in ITER reference operating scenarios 2 and 4 were successfully simulated. The magnetic field maps were provided by collaborators in ITER, the plasma data by UKAEA and the birth profiles for NBI and ICRF ions by VR. The simulation results indicate that fast ion loads to the plasma facing components of ITER stay within safety limits, even without the ripple compensation. The highest peak loads, found in reference scenario 4, are of the order of 1 MW/m2, located on the port limiters, which can withstand loads up to 3 MW/m2. In most cases, surprisingly low power was found on the divertor plates but this is explained by finite Larmor radius effects that are taken into account. The ferritic compensation was found to reduce the fast ion load close to the axisymmetric level. Alpha particles from thermal fusion reactions are vastly dominant fast ion species found on the walls, constituting 70 - 100 % of the total power load. Some unresolved issues still remain before the final recommendation on ripple losses in ITER can be given. The effect of MHD activity and microturbulence, neither of which are included in the current model, needs to be determined. Also, the effect of localized perturbations to the magnetic field, such as breeder blanket modules, must be further explored. |
Abstract (fin): | Tässä työssä simuloitiin ITERin nopeiden ionien aiheuttamia seinäkuormia käyttäen täysin kolmiulotteisia magneettikentän ja reaktorin seinän malleja. Näiden häiriöiden kunnolliseen tutkimiseen on luotava toimiva teoreettinen malli. Myöskin MHD-aktiivisuuden ja mikroturbulenssin vaikutus hiukkasten ratoihin tulisi sisällyttää simulointimalliin. |
