Abstract (eng): | The objective of this thesis was to collect and present knowledge regarding process maturity in small software companies (in Finland). Intended audience for this thesis are people engaged in developing a small software company or those who have an academic interest in the same subject. The intention is to provide useful information for the readers so they can continue the journey towards better maturity. First, basic theory and concepts found in literature related to maturity in small software companies is introduced. This includes the concept of software processes, software process models and methods for process improvement. Next the internationally established standards and models for software process assessment and development are presented. The empirical part, performed through interviews, concentrated in finding out the current status of process maturity in small software companies. This was started with a discussion regarding processes and process development activities and priorities. The level of knowledge and interest regarding process standards and assessment models was discussed next. At the end the interviewees were asked to present their views for the characteristics of an ideal model for process assessment and development in a small software company. Based on the research it can be presented that even though the standards and models might be suitable for use, they have not been adopted into practice. A process assessment model aimed directly at the small software companies might change that. |
Abstract (fin): | Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena oli kerätä ja esittää tietämys koskien prosessien kypsyyttä pienissä ohjelmistoyrityksissä (Suomessa). Tarkoituksena on esittää hyödyllistä tietoa lukijoille, jotta he voivat edetä kohti kypsempiä prosesseja. |
