Abstract (eng): | In brief, product development aims to transform customer's needs into concrete cost-effective product. Recently increased investments in product development have been made in order to gain more profit. On this basis product development has a significant role in a venture's cost management. Decision-making in the product development phase has a great effect on the whole life-cycle of the product, which makes it a crucial success factor. Product development service providers have to observe customers' and other participants' needs and demands, and improve continuously their processes and ways of doing business continuously to gain and sustain competitive advantage. Management of information and intellectual capital set demands on process control and management. Systematic and harmonized work procedures ensure better management of ever changing product development processes. In addition customer projects become more cost efficient. This master thesis investigates the process of creating a performance measuring system as a part of a quality management system for a product development business unit. One of the main tasks of this thesis is to describe the measuring system construction process from the process mapping phase all the way to implementation and utilizing the measuring system. In addition different management philosophies and mind-sets exploited in product development are observed. A measuring system was planned and built in a real-life case for Done Information Oy's product development unit PDC. Objectives for PDC's measuring system are to increase and deepen general understanding of the nature of product development, improve process management and control, and make customer projects more effective. Measuring system is used in PDC as a practical tool for decision making, generating accurate estimates, deepen understanding of every day operations, benchmarking outcomes, and evaluating the overall level of success. The thesis pictures the measuring system construction process. The processes of PDC were mapped in order to create a solid ground for improvement activities and quality management. Furthermore, a measuring system was created for the internal use of PDC. As the main aspects of the successful measuring system project were found to be identifying and definition of the critical success factors, commitment of staff, support of the top management, visualized process mapping, choosing the appropriate metrics and measures, throughout planning of the implementation phase and real interest on utilizing the measuring system. |
Abstract (fin): | Tuotekehityspanostuksien kasvaessa tuotekehityksen odotetaan tekevän tulosta. |
