Logging on to the customer computers

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): Leveraging the locational advantages and coordinating the sourcing activities on a global level can have a profound effect on competitiveness from short-term cost, and long-term strategic perspective.
When operating in a foreign host country, multinationals shape the sourcing strategy to fulfil the needs of the local operations.
This study concentrates on sourcing decisions in a foreign host country from local perspective: the challenges and benefits of sourcing locally, how to decide between international and local sources.
Possibilities to leverage the local potential on a global level are discussed briefly.
Case company in this study is a manufacturer of capital goods; the host country is Brazil.

The research problem of this study is: How can a multinational manufacturer of capital goods decide whether to use a local source or import when operating in a foreign host country?
The objectives are:.

- To study the theoretical background and relevant research on the subject, to understand the current operations of the case company.

- To map the local sourcing potential in Brazil, and to identify the biggest challenges and benefits of sourcing in Brazil.

- To create a framework for sourcing decisions, a decision-making procedure that takes the relevant factors into account To understand the basic nature and challenges of international sourcing activities, literature on the subject is reviewed.
Based on purchasing, outsourcing and global sourcing literature, a sourcing decision framework tailored for the situation of the case company is created.
The framework provides a decision-maker with a procedure that can be followed when facing a decision whether to source locally or import a specific item to the host country.

The practical part consists of the implementation of the framework on a case item, and practical recommendations for the sourcing initiative.
The findings indicate that local sourcing bears benefits from strategic, operational and cost perspective for the Brazilian markets.
The cost advantage to the current, import-based sourcing model is small, mainly originating from the high trade barriers of Brazil.
Taking all the relevant factors into account, local sourcing of the case item is recommended, but careful implementation is required.
Highest risks involved in this case are product quality, and trust related supplier risks.
The Brazilian case item does not seem competitive on a global level, but could be provided e.g. to the neighboring countries.
Abstract (fin): Hankintatoimen alueellinen optimointi ja globaalin hankinnan koordinoiminen vaikuttavat yrityksen kilpailukykyyn luomalla sekä lyhyen tähtäimen kustannusetuja että pitkän tähtäimen strategisia hyötyjä.
Monikansalliset yritykset muokkaavat aluekohtaisia hankintamallejaan tukemaan paremmin paikallista toimintaa ja tarpeita.
Täma tutkimus keskittyy aluekohtaisiin hankintapäätöksiin: paikallisen hankinnan haasteisiin ja hyötyihin, sekä päätöksentekoprosessiin paikallisen ja kansainvälisen hankinnan välillä.
Paikallisten toimittajien mahdollinen globaali hyödyntäminen käsitellaan myös yleisellä tasolla.
Työn yritysesimerkkinä on monikansallinen pääomahyödykkeiden valmistaja ja alueena Brasilia.

Työn tutkimusongelma on: Miten monikansallisen pääomahyödykkeiden valmistajan tulisi tehdä hankintapäätös paikallisen toimittajan ja tuontituotteiden välillä?
Tavoitteet ovat:.

- Teoreettisen taustatiedon ja relevantin tutkimuksen kartoitus, yrityksen nykyisen hankintamallin ymmärtäminen.

- Paikallisten hankintamahdollisuuksien kartoitus, paikallisen hankinnan haasteet ja hyödyt.

- Viitekehyksen luonti hankintapäätöksiä varten: päätöksentekoprosessi, jota seuraamalla relevantit tekijät otetaan huomioon hankintapäätöksenteossa.

Globaaliin hankintaan liittyvä tutkimus kartoitetaan kansainvälisen hankintatoimen luonteen ja suurimpien haasteiden ymmärtämiseksi.
Viitekehyksen luomista varten käydään läpi erilaisia hankintatoimintaan ja ulkoistamiseen liittyvia päätöksentekoa tukevia työkaluja.
Kirjallisuuden pohjalta luodaan esimerkkiyrityksen tilanteeseen sopiva hankintapäätösviitekehys, joka auttaa päätöksentekijää ottamaan huomioon relevantit päätöksentekoon vaikuttavat tekijät päätettäessä paikallisen hankinnan ja tuonnin välillä.

Käytännön osuudessa luotua viitekehystä sovelletaan valittuun tuotteeseen, tehdään päätös tuotteen hankinnasta, sekä annetaan suositukset hankintamallin toteutusta varten.
Tulosten perusteella tuotteen paikallisella hankinnalla saavutetaan strategisia ja operatiivisia etuja, sekä kilpailukykyisempi kustannus Brasilian markkinoille.
Kustannusetu nykyiseen hankintamalliin verrattuna on suhteellisen pieni ja johtuu pääasiassa Brasilian korkeista tuontitulleista.
Kaikki tekijät huomioonotettaessa tuotteen paikallinen hankinta on suositeltavaa, mutta toiminnan aloitus ja seuranta on toteutettava huolellisesti.
Paikallisen hankinnan suurimmat riskit tässä tapauksessa ovat tuotteiden laatu sekä luotettavuuteen liittyvät toimittajariskit.
Tuotteen globaali hankinta Brasiliasta ei vaikuta kilpailukykyiseltä ratkaisulta, mutta esimerkiksi naapurimaihin sen toimitus on mahdollista.
