Abstract (eng): | In this Master's thesis the operation of electroacoustic filters were studied and replacing of the existing filter structures with vibrating microelectromechanical filters was considered. At first, the basics and the features which limit the operation frequency and the miniaturization of the existing filters (SAW and FBAR) were studied. After this the novel microelectromechanical resonators was studied, and the possibilities of utilizing those at the microwave frequency were considered. According to the research results it seems that the existing structures cannot be replaced with the structures that are based on rods, disk or ring type vibrating elements made of silicon. In theory, these structures could operate as filters at relatively high frequency, but the fabrication of the structures is almost impossible technique. Similar structures can be fabricated if the operation frequency is below about 100 MHz but as the frequency increases the structures become so small that the fabrication process limits are reached. The actual limiting factor is the reachable gap size that needs to be reduced in order to produce large enough coupling between the electrodes and the resonator. Beside the direct replacement of the existing structures, the possibility of creating totally novel radio architecture with these novel filter structures was considered; but the features of these devices seem to be inadequate for that, also. |
Abstract (fin): | Tässä diplomityössä tutustuttiin elektroakustisten suodattimien toimintaan ja tutkittiin, voisivatko olemassa olevat suodatinrakenteet olla korvattavissa mikromekaanisista värähtelevistä rakenteista koostuvilla suodattimilla. |
