You can read theses on the Learning Centre customer computers, which are available on all floors.

Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): The first part of thesis concentrates on the theory behind nitriding and hard chromium plating and their influence on friction, fatigue and corrosion resistance.
The nitriding processes used in the experimental part are introduced as well as typical nitriding faults and their prevention through the process control.

In the experimental part friction, fatigue and corrosion resistance of nitrided Imanite M and 42CrMo4 steel specimens were compared with hard chromium plated specimens.
Corrosion resistance was examined using salt spray tests and a pin-on-disk apparatus was used for friction and fatigue testing.
Surface hardness, case and nitriding depths were measured using a Vickers-hardness apparatus.
Surface roughness, surface profiles and bearing curves were measured before and after the pin-on-disk tests.

Salt spray tests show the influence of base material on the nitriding result and the effect of compound layer porosity on corrosion resistance.
The nitriding processes which produce non-porous compound layers had a slightly better corrosion resistance and smaller friction coefficient compared to hard chromium plated specimens.
In general differences in friction coefficients between nitrided and hard chromium plated specimens were small.
Abstract (fin): Työn kirjallisessa osassa käsiteltiin typetyksen ja kovakromauksen teoriaa sekä menetelmien vaikutusta korroosionkestoon, kitkaan ja kulumiseen.
Lisäksi käytiin läpi kokeellisessa osassa käytetyt typetysmenetelmät sekä tyypilliset typetyksessä tapahuvat virheet ja niiden ehkäisy prosessin valvonnalla.

Työn kokeellisessa osassa vertailtiin eri typetysmenetelmillä typetettyjen Imanite M ja 42CrMo4 koekappaleiden korroosionkestoa sekä kitkaa ja kulumista kovakromattuihin koekappaleisiin.
Korroosionkestoa tutkittiin suolasumukokeilla, kitkan ja kulumisen tutkimiseen käytettiin tappikulutuskoetta.
Koekappaleiden pintakovuudet, kerrospaksuudet sekä typetyssyvyydet määritettiin Vickers-kovuusmittauslaitteiston avulla.
Lisäksi tappikulutuskappaleille mitattiin pinnan karheudet, kantokäyrät sekä pinnan profiilit ennen ja jälkeen koetta.

Suolasumukokeiden tuloksista ilmeni perusaineen vaikutus typetystulokseen sekä muodostuvan yhdistekerroksen tiiviyden vaikutus korroosionkestoon.
Typetysmenetelmillä, joilla yhdistekerrokseen tiiviys oli tarpeeksi suuri, saavutettiin hieman kovakromattuja koekappaleita parempi korroosionkesto sekä pienemmät kitkakertoimet.
Muuten typetettyjen ja kovakromattujen kappaleiden välillä ei havaittu suurta eroa kitkakertoimissa.
