Abstract (eng): | Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) allows radio astronomers to resolve the structure of stellar sources with high sensitivity and unprecedented angular resolution. Even geodesy, astrometry and spacecraft tracking often employ VLBI for their measurements. In traditional VLBI the results are unfortunately available only after a very long delay. However, with the advent of high-speed networks it has now become possible to significantly shorten the turn-around time and ultimately provide results in real-time. Real-time results are a major goal of the European Union EXPReS development project. Metsähovi is responsible for the data acquisition system. This master's thesis describes the EXPReS development work I carried out at Metsähovi. The thesis covers the development of real-time data acquisition and a corresponding suitable data transfer protocol. In addition, it describes a successful international real-time demonstration given to the EU. This work has received financial support from the European Commission (DGINFSO), within the Sixth Framework Programme (Integrated Infrastructure Initiative contract number 026642, EXPReS). |
Abstract (fin): | Radioastronomiassa voidaan pitkäkantainterferometrian (VLBI) avulla kuvata tähtitaivaan kohteiden rakenteita erinomaisella herkkyydellä ja kulmaresoluutiolla. Nopeiden tietoliikenneverkkojen kehittymisen myötä on kuitenkin mahdollista lyhentää viiveitä huomattavasti – viime kädessä VLBI-havainnointi tulee antamaan tuloksia jopa reaaliajassa. Reaaliaikainen VLBI on tärkein päämäärä Euroopan Unionin EXPReS -kehityshankkessa. Metsähovin tehtävänä on kehittää tähän sopiva reaaliaikainen tiedonkeruujärjestelmä. Tässä diplomityössä kuvataan Metsähovissa EXPReS-projektia varten tekemäni työt. Erityisesti käsittelen toimivan toimivan reaaliaikaisen tiedonkeruun ja tiedonsiirron vaatimat kehitystyöt. Lopuksi esitän tulokset menestyksekkäästä kansainvälisestä VLBI-demonstraatiosta, jossa EU:lle osoitettiin kehittämäni järjestelmän toimivuus. |
