Abstract (eng): | The importance of services for industrial companies has increased substantially during the recent years and a large portion of the income comes from services in many companies. Service operations are normally handled very locally and therefore services can vary significantly between different locations within a company. Local nature of service operations causes challenges for increasing the cost efficiency. This master's thesis investigates the possibilities of industrial companies to gain cost savings through harmonization of service operations. It is examined, which situational factors affect harmonization of service operations and which means assist in harmonization of service operations. Also suitability of harmonization means to particular situations is investigated. Thesis consists of a literature review and three case studies. The purpose of the literature review was to develop theoretical models for situational factors that have an effect on and for means that support harmonization of service operations. Since the academic literature on harmonization of service operations is very scarce, situational factors and harmonization means were searched in literature sources related to service internationalization, service classifications, service operations management, product standardization and contingency theory. The role of the three case studies was to examine how the different situational factors affect harmonization, and to analyze which harmonization means have been actually utilized in different situations. Based on these analyses theoretical models of situational factors and harmonization means were validated. Main findings of the thesis are a set of situational factors that affect strongly in harmonization of service operations and a set of harmonization means that can be used to assist in harmonization of service operations. The most important situational factors supporting harmonization are economies of scale as the source of competitive advantage, homogeneity of customers, low intensity of customer inputs, arm's length communication with the customers and low variability of product portfolio. The most important harmonization means depend on multiple situational factors. One should however pay attention to each service supply chain element (process, data, people and parts). If insufficient amount of attention is not paid to one of the four elements, it is very hard to successfully harmonize service operations. |
Abstract (fin): | Palveluiden merkitys teollisuusyrityksille on kasvanut huomattavasti viime vuosina ja useilla yrityksillä suuri osa tuloista tulee nykyään palveluista. Palveluiden toimittaminen on usein järjestetty paikallisesti ja asiakkaan kokema palvelu saattaa vaihdella alueittain huomattavasti. Palveluiden paikallinen luonne asettaa haasteita kustannustehokkuudelle. |
