Abstract (eng): | The purpose of this study is to formulate alliance strategy for the case company with the aim of improving its market position in an emerging market. This study looks at Sino-Western strategic alliances from a perspective which highlights the influence of network embeddedness on the interfirm relationships. The research methods integrate social network analysis with a traditional resource and capability perspective to study partner selection. Since the recorded performance of international strategic alliances varies considerably, the study also attempts to determine the key success factors in Sino-Western strategic alliances through literature review and comparative case study. The study presents a model for partner selection and performance prediction in the theory part. The study empirically analyzes the operating environment for alliances. The proposed model is then applied to partner selection for the case company. Social network approach is proved to be an efficient tool in identifying potential partners. The analysis reveals that the key issues in the partner screening and selection process are centrality, social capital and liability, the availability of the partner, and interdependence. The thesis also reports a comparative case study of three international joint ventures within the relevant industry in China. Four factors (partner selection, management control, trust and culture) are identified as the key success factors in Sino-Western strategic alliances. |
