Abstract (eng): | In recent decades, companies' operating principles have changed. As a result of increased competition in the market, an economic success has become difficult to achieve. Companies must simultaneously take into account several factors, such as technological possibilities, marketing, and user experience. Due to the increased competition, broad supply, and the increased consumer awareness and demands, product development has changed from being the technology-driven into being more user-centered and comprehensive. This offers a challenge to product development activities in organizations, which is a prerequisite for the long-term success and productivity. Therefore, organizations want to invest more in R&D activities by developing processes and practices. This thesis was made in 2009-2010 in cooperation with Vaisala Group. The aim of the study was to evaluate and select appropriate methods and tools, which meet the company's needs, and support and improve the company's concept and product development activity. The study emphasized the initial phase of the product development process, particularly for new business opportunities, which formed the basis for all the target company's R&D projects. The concept development activity in the target organization was studied by interviewing employees. Working practices were also observed. This is how the big picture of concept development activity in the target company was formed. In the target company, concept creation and product development activities have been developed considerably in recent years and its importance as an essential part of the business has been identified. Several strengths were found in the current practices, but there were some shortcomings in the concept development as well, which were hoped to be improved. Founded shortcomings can be influenced only partially by the selected design methods and tools. Essential for the utilization of methods and tools is to identify the right situations and needs for their use. Developing the concept creation and product development activity more comprehensively, however, would require a larger further research related in organization culture, social psychology and project management. |
Abstract (fin): | Yritysten toimintaperiaatteet ovat viime vuosikymmenien aikana muuttuneet. Kilpailu markkinoilla on kasvanut, jonka seurauksena taloudellisesta menestymisestä on tullut monimutkainen prosessi, jossa yritysten on huomioitava samanaikaisesti useita tekijöitä, kuten teknologian tarjoamat mahdollisuudet, markkinointi, ja käyttäjäkokemukset. |
