Abstract (eng): | Rising importance of information technology and its growing commonality shapes role of corporate information management (CIM). This inquiry studies if futures research methodologies can be used to support CIM strategic planning. Study has been carried out implementing futures research on CIM futures and studying that process as a single-case case study. Field Anomaly Relaxation (FAR) was used as a futures research method. Main differences between FAR and scenario planning methods are FAR method's iterative nature and ability to produce clear audit trail for judgments. Futures research was focused to CIM domain by comparing futures to two central IT governance frameworks. Future study produced a model of futures that describes which factors affect corporate and CIM futures, what kind of futures there could be and what consequences would they have in terms of IT strategic impact and IT decision domains. Usefulness of the future study and its results are discussed based on interviews and the first hand experiences of the researcher authoring the future study. Results are compared to the scenario methodology literature. Study shows potential of iterative approach to produce crystallized strategic model of the future. It also displays how non-discriminatory consideration of vast number of futures stimulates discussion and thinking. Limitations of FAR are identified to be amount of work and challenging process, which lessen usability of the method. Study suggests that future study could become part of corporate strategic planning process and business units and functions could further develop shared futures visions to the benefit of their own decision making and to identify strategic opportunities. It is also argued that this kind of corporate wide process would increase strategic thinking and collect strategic signals for the top management. |
Abstract (fin): | Tietoteknologian kasvava merkitys yrityksille ja jokapäiväistyminen muokkaa tietohallinnon roolia. Tässä tutkimuksessa pyritään selvittämään, voiko tulevaisuudentutkimusmenetelmiä käyttää tietohallinnon strategisen johtamisen tukena. Tutkimus on toteutettu tekemällä tulevaisuustutkimus tietohallinnon tulevaisuuksista ja tutkimalla tätä prosessia yhden tapauksen tapaustutkimuksena. Tulevaisuudentutkimusmenetelmänä on käytetty Field Anomaly Relaxation -menetelmää (FAR-menetelmää), jonka keskeinen ero skenaariosuunnittelumenetelmään on sen iteratiivinen luonne ja tehtyjen valintojen helppo seurattavuus. Tulevaisuustutkimusta kohdennettiin tietohallinnon tarpeisiin vertaamalla tulevaisuuksia kahteen keskeiseen hyvän tietohallintotavan kehykseen. |
