Abstract (eng): | The whole telecommunication market is changing fast with the amount of data that is handled by the backbone network increasing rapidly. Drivers to the capacity need include high rate-point-to- point connections,nove1 streaming applications, as advanced, Video on Demand (VoD), High definition Television (HDTV) networks Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN).The need for backbone capacity has tripled in the last three years, mainly due to transit traffic to other operators. This demand for high capacities in the network sets pressure on the backbone network: it has to be flexible and future: proof. Here flexibility refers to the interoperability between different vendor equipment Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) systems. Networks are not heterogeneous in their need therefore it makes sense to use different solutions and/or even vendors in separate areas based on uneven traffic volume distribution. When transmitting an optical signal between DWDM systems manufactured by different vendors, there are a few things that need to be considered. First, although the OTN (Optical Transport Network) frame is standardised, transponders from different vendors do not work together as a rule. There are several technical reasons for this: vendors often have developed and implemented their own Forward Error Correction (FEC). Optical technology dependent aspects are not defined for the line interfaces in order to support some freedom in technology changes. According to G.709, the Optical channel Data Unit ODU experimental overhead is allocated to be used by vendors or operators to support an application that requires ODU overhead support in the network. For instance, the optical power is left unspecified because it has an optimum value for a specific technical configuration, the limiting effect of optical signal to noise ratio, what kind of modulation is used. In order to test the interoperability, a set of test was performed with vendor D DWDM system transmitting a wavelength into a DWDM system from vendor C. The tests show that the chromatic dispersion is a challenge because of the different dispersion compensation solutions. A DWDM system that uses electronic dispersion compensation on each channel will achieve a longer span length compared to a system using dispersion compensation fibres on the line. This limits the distance for transponders that has to rely on dispersion compensation module implemented on the DWDM line. An investigation of the ITU-T standards (G.709, G.959.1 and G.698.1) concerning interoperability shows that the DWDM interfaces are standardised for metro DWDM networks without line-amplification. The long haul networks have intentionally not been very strictly specified in order to give an opportunity for different technology solutions to be developed. |
Abstract (fin): | Televiestintä muuttuu tänä päivänä nopeasti. Yksi DWDM -järjestelmän rajoittavimmista tekijöistä on kromaattinen dispersio. Kromaattisen dispersion kompensaatiomenetelmä on rajoittava tekijä. Mikäli on käytetty kanavakohtaista dispersiokompensaatiota, hypyn pituus voi olla niin pitkä, etteivät dispersiokompensaatiomoduulit linkin päissä riitä kompensoimaan ulkoiselle aallonpituudelle muodostunutta dispersiota riittävän paljon. Ulkoisen aallonpituuden saavutettava etäisyys kuitudispersiokompensaatiolla on riippuvainen käytetyistä dispersiokompensaatiomoduulien arvoista. Optical Transport Network OTN -standardissa on jätetty tilaa teknologian kehitystä varten. |
