Abstract (eng): | The overall inconsistency of programme loudness has become a notable problem in broadcasting. One reason for this is the signal peak value based monitoring, which should only be used for preventing overload and distortion. The peak normalization has also made possible the loudness war, where commercial broadcasters are compressing their material to the extreme, leading to loss of sound quality and dynamics. Another reason is that current production and distribution processes have been automated as far as possible. That is why mixing by ear has become rare and programme loudness inconsistent. As a solution, experts on audio around the world developed a new metering technique, which roughly models the human loudness perception. With the new meter it is easy to achieve uniform programme loudness level and the abuse of peak normalisation will become impossible. In this thesis the concept of loudness normalisation has been acquainted and the TV programme loudness variations of YLE has been measured and analysed. The results show a definite need for adoption of the new loudness normalisation habits. In this thesis the practical solution proposals has also been given, which include how the new methods could be implemented in different parts of the broadcast system. Technical and also financial matters have being covered. |
Abstract (fin): | Ohjelmien välisistä äänekkyystasovaihteluista on tullut merkittävä ongelma televisiotoiminnassa. |
