Abstract (eng): Traditionally musical instruments are restricted by their physical properties, such as size, shape, weight, and location.
By analysing an instrument and its sound production, a digital model can be constructed.
The original sound of the instrument can be imitated by using the model without the physical restrictions.
Furthermore, the model enables arbitrary modifications of the properties of the virtual instrument.

This thesis introduces a parametric model for an electric guitar based on sound samples recorded from the guitar.
Moreover, typical characteristics of the electric guitar sound have been investigated.
The model is based on digital waveguides with novel proposals.

The excitation block of the model was made using integrating filters, which minimizes the amount of data needed to reproduce the excitation pulse.
Inharmonicity of the string was found to affect the way how the plucking point and the pickup location shape the spectrum of the electric guitar.
The effect was modelled by using all pass filters in the plucking point filter and in the magnetic pickup filter.
In addition, time-varying decay of harmonics and pitch glide of the electric guitar tone were modelled with time-varying filters.

The model presented in this thesis is capable of producing realistic electric guitar tones, and the mobile platform implementation enables real-time playing of the model.
Abstract (fin): Perinteisesti soittimia rajoittavat niiden fysikaaliset ominaisuudet, kuten koko, muoto, paino ja sijainti.
