You can read theses on the Learning Centre customer computers, which are available on all floors.

Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): In this study, the strength class of laminated log was examined.
The aim was to determine the strength class that could be linked to standard SFS 5973.
The target was set to strength class C24.

The project was conducted with the cooperation of log house manufacturers, which ordered the study and provided the logs.
Measurements of bending strength and modulus of elasticity were performed at the Aalto University in the Department of Applied Mechanics in Otaniemi, Espoo.
In addition moisture content and other values of wood were measured.

Targets were not met due to the weak finger joints, which reduced values of bending strength.
No reduction in MOE.
Three pieces failed to achieve the strength 24 N/mm2.
Testing involved some laminated logs with defects and none of them failed to reach the requirements.

If the finger joints are improved to work at sufficient level the laminated logs have a good possibility to meet the requirements of strength class C24.
An additional method of increasing strength properties is to improve the sorting.
Abstract (fin): Työssä tutkittiin lamellihirren taivutuslujuutta.
Tavoitteena oli määrittää lamellihirsien lujuus. joka olisi yhdistettävissä standardin SFS 5973 asetuksiin.
Tavoitteeksi lujuudelle asetettiin lujuusluokka C24.

Tutkimukset tehtiin hirsitalovalmistajien tilauksesta. jotka toimittivat testattavat hirret.
Mittaukset suoritettiin Aalto-yliopistolla Sovelletun mekaniikan laitoksella Espoon Otaniemessä.
Taivutuslujuuden lisäksi mitattiin myös kimmokerroin ja muita hirsien arvoja.

Tavoitteista jäätiin johtuen heikoista sormijatkoksista. jotka heikensivät taivutuslujuutta.
Kimmokerroin ei heikentynyt.
Kolme kappaletta oli lujuudeltaan alle 24 N/mm2.
Vertailuun otettiin myös ennakkoa ajatellen viallisempia kappaleita verrokeiksi ja näissä kappaleissa ei jääty alle 24 N/mm2 taivutuslujuuden.

Mikäli sormijatkokset saadaan toimimaan riittävällä tasolla, on lamellihirsillä hyvät edellytykset nykyisellä lajittelullaan päästä tavoitelujuuteen C24.
Lujuutta voidaan nostaa myös parantamalla lajittelua.
