Abstract (eng): | For autonomous systems it is crucial to know robot's position, and have some kind of understanding of its surroundings. Monocular vision based odometry has been successfully used in structured scenes under constrained and unconstrained motions, but depth discontinuities in forest environment poses major challenges for interest point tracking algorithms. Additionally, real time tracking remains a difficult problem without good a priori knowledge of interest points' positions and camera motion. The usage of an omnidirectional camera helps to extend the lifespan of interest points, and enables better position estimates. In this thesis, I present a novel approach to construct a robust and efficient real time interest point tracking algorithm. It is based on the usage of interest points' relative positions to sample affine invariant 1D line descriptors, which can be efficiently matched using a graphics processing unit (GPU). Thus workload is evenly distributed for central processing unit and GPU, and all computational resources are utilized. The developed Line-based Affine Invariant Features (LAIF) was evaluated against the state of the art algorithm Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF) on planar and natural scene. SURF reported 10 - 100 times more incorrect matches. On video sequences LAIF was able to track features approximately twice as long as SURF, while still processing 1800 x 320 grayscale images at 20 frames per second. Also a review of state of the art visual odometry algorithms is conducted and it is concluded that it still remains an open question whether these can be generalized to a forest environment. Biggest problem is caused by short lifespan of tracked features as the camera moves near trees and bushes with significant 3D structure. |
Abstract (fin): | Autonomisille järjestelmille, on erityisen tärkeää, että robotin paikka on tiedossa ja sillä on jonkinlainen käsitys ympäristöstä. Yhteen kameraan perustuvaa odometriaa on hyödynnetty rakennetussa ympäristössä rajoitetuissa ja vapaissa liikkeissä. Kuitenkin metsäympäristössä vahva 3D rakenne aiheuttaa ongelmia kiintopisteiden seuraamisessa. Kehitettyä Line-based Affine Invariant Features (LAIF):a verrattiin nykyaikaiseen ja hyvänä pidettyyn Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF) algoritmiin tasomaisissa ja luonnollisissa ympäristöissä, ja SURF generoi 10 - 100 kertaa enemmän vääriä tuloksia. |
