Abstract (eng): The extended finite element method was introduced in the late 1990's to minimize the remeshing effort while solving the elasticity equations on a single domain with various different crack configurations.
Nowadays the method has been implemented in multiple open source and in a few commercial finite element software packages.

In this thesis, we formulate the extended finite element method, derive an a priori error estimate in H1-norm, review a usual method of stress intensity factor extraction and verify the derived error estimate numerically.
Furthermore, we assess the extended finite element support of Abaqus 6.12 and evaluate stress intensity factors on multiple test cases where analytical solutions are available.
Abstract (fin): Laajennettu elementtimenetelmä kehitettiin 90-luvun loppupuolella särönmallintamiseen liittyvän geometrian uudelleenverkotuksen vähentämiseksi.
Nykyään menetelmä on toteutettuna useissa avoimen lähdekoodin ja muutamissa kaupallisissa elementtiratkaisijoissa.

Tässä työssä esitellään laajennettu elementtimenetelmä, johdetaan menetelmälle a priori virhe-estimaatti H1-normissa, tarkastellaan yleistä menetelmää jännitysintensiteettikertoimien laskemiseksi ja todennetaan virhe-estimaatti numeerisesti.
Lisäksi työssä arvioidaan kaupallisen elementtiratkaisijan, Abaqus 6.12:n, toteutusta laajennetusta elementtimenetelmästä ja verrataan ohjelmistolla laskettuja jännitysintensiteettikertoimia koetilanteisiin, joissa tarkka ratkaisu tiedetään.
