Abstract (eng): | The objective of this thesis is to design an instrumentation for thoracic impedance measurement. The instrumentation should detect changes in thoracic impedance caused by pulmonary edema, which requires segmental, low-frequency bio-impedance measurements with four-electrode method. Moreover, the instrumentation will be integrated into health chair and thus, the measurement is performed ubiquitously from hand to hand with dry stainless steel electrodes embedded to the armrests of the chair. Test measurements are performed at 2, 3 and 5 kHz frequencies. Six test subjects with different characteristics are used, and in addition to dry electrode measurements, gel electrode measurements are performed to evaluate the effect of the high contact impedance of dry electrodes and to obtain reference results. According to the results, the instrumentation is able to measure bio-impedance with high reproducibility and accuracy when integrated into a chair. Moreover, it is able to detect differences caused by body composition and gender. Designed instrumentation meets all the requirements set to it. Possible problems related to electrode placement and high contact impedance affect the test measurements performed within the scope of this thesis, but are unrelated to the actual instrumentation design. Thus, the objective of this thesis is achieved. |
Abstract (fin): | Työn tavoitteena on suunnitella instrumentointi rintakehän impedanssin mittaamiseen. Instrumentoinnin on tarkoitus havaita keuhkoödeeman aiheuttamat muutokset rintakehän impedanssissa, mikä vaatii segmentaalista, matalataajuista bioimpedanssin mittaamista nelipistemenetelmällä. Näin ollen tämän työn tavoitteet on saavutettu. |
