Abstract (eng):The thesis is a review of literature dealing with the energy sector of the European Union.
The objective is to present the most important topics related to the present state of energy sector and its possible future developments.
The thesis is intended as background information for the educational activity of the Finnish Academies of Technology and the Estonian Academy of Sciences concerning the possible EU-membership of Baltic countries.
The energy policies of the European Union are presented at a general level and therefore all the information is applicable to all the Member States and also the candidate countries.
The present state of the European energy system including historical data of energy production in Europe is presented first.
The most important topics of the integration of the internal energy market, as the trans-European energy networks, competition and taxation of energy products, are described.
Securing the supply of energy and protecting the environment are major goals of the energy policy of the European Union.
These subjects are also dealt with.
International co-operation of the European Union with non-member states is at the moment important from the point of view of Estonia and the other Baltic countries.
Therefore, three international programmes for co-operation are presented.
Current energy strategies of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are shortly described.
The energy strategy of Finland is also presented.
To conclude, some future energy outlooks for Europe are presented.
