Abstract (eng): | The purpose of this thesis was to explore suitable network architectures for an interactive space that would be built in Aalto University's DiWa -Digital War room project. DiWa interactive space consists of several computing devices including three computers with large high resolution touch screens and users' personal laptop computers. The challenge was to enable all computing devices, which resided inside the space, to cooperate seamlessly and, therefore, enhance collaboration in-group processes. We examined two research alternatives for traditional networking, which was found inefficient for the task. However, both of those alternatives lacked in software implementations for Windows platform. Windows was our platform of choice because of requirements from the stakeholders. Therefore, we designed and implemented an overlay network structure, which was based on publisher -subscriber pattern and Pragmatic General Multicast (PGM). The implementation was programmed as a python module utilizing ZeroMQ socket network library. We conducted both pilot tests and performance tests to analyse our implemented system. For the pilot tests, we built an application on top of the networking implementation. The application allowed users to share documents and web pages and remote control other connected devices in a limited fashion. The performance tests were carried in the same DiWa interactive space as the pilot tests and simulated message delivery with several devices present in the network. The pilot tests were carried out without major problems with neither our application nor our network implementation. However, the participants did not utilize the space or the application efficiently as it was their first visit to the space as users. The user interface of the application got several development ideas, but the reception was good in general. In addition, the performance tests showed that our networking design was lightweight and efficient. However, wirelessly connected clients could be a possible bottleneck. |
Abstract (fin): | Tämän diplomityön tarkoituksena oli tutkia interaktiiviseen tilaan sopivia verkkoarkkitehtuureja. Tila rakennetaan Aalto-yliopiston DiWa - Digital War room projektin käyttöön. |
