Abstract (eng): This thesis presents a computational investigation of continuous extrusion of copper using the finite element method.
The primary objective of the study was to develop a three-dimensional finite element model for analysing material flow and tool contact pressures during continuous extrusion of copper.

The first part of the thesis presents the theory of continuous extrusion and describes the mechanical behaviour of oxygen-free copper under conditions similar to those typical for the Conform extrusion.
The basic theory of Conform-extrusion is revised to correspond to the modern construction the equipment.

The second part of the thesis is devoted to numerical modelling of continuous extrusion.
The computational and numerical methods used in modelling of metal forming processes are presented.
Two different approaches to analyse Conform extrusion are evaluated by finite element models developed with commercial FE-programs DEFORM and ABAQUS.
The models employ different formulations, solution methods and mesh management schemes.
It was found that the central problems in modelling the Conform process are excessively long computing time and problems associated with mesh distortion.

The results obtained give new information about material flow and deformation mechanisms during Conform-extrusion.
The results also show that thin internal shear bands exist in the deformation zone.
This is consistent with earlier experimental findings.
Abstract (fin): Työssä tutkitaan kuparin jatkuvatoimista pursotusta laskennallisesti elementtimenetelmällä.
Työn tavoitteena on kehittää toimiva kolmiulotteinen elementtimalli materiaalin virtauksen ja työkaluihin kohdistuvien kuormituksen tutkimiseen kuparin jatkuvatoimisessa pursotuksessa.

Työn alkuosassa käsitellään Conform-pursotuksen teoriaa ja hapettoman kuparin ominaisuuksia Conform-pursotusta vastaavissa olosuhteissa.
Prosessin perusteoriasta esitetään uusi modernia laitekonstruktiota vastaava muoto.
