Abstract (eng): | Since the seminal work of Schumpeter, innovations have been considered an imperative factor enhancing economic growth. Not surprisingly, innovations have received substantial attention both in the public press and in scholarly publications. In the present study, I sought to extend our understanding of the mechanisms that influence product innovation success and failure by addressing how (1) market learning, (2) complementary assets and (3) collaborative ties influence innovation performance. The research problem was approached by reviewing relevant literature and studying the lifecycles of 61 Finnish product innovations commercialized in 1995-1998 by companies, whose primary industry was manufacture of machinery and equipment, manufacture of electrical equipment and software. The data sources included interviews with key individuals, a questionnaire survey and various secondary sources. From the perspective of market learning, I argue that previous studies have taken an overly simplistic approach to business model renewal by failing to take into account both their learning and unlearning content. In particular, I found that business model changes that entailed learning were associated with success, while business model changes that entailed unlearning were associated with failure. Moreover, when business model changes incorporated both learning and unlearning, any positive effects of learning were offset by the negative effects associated with unlearning. Again, from the perspective of complementary assets, I found support for the premise that companies endowed with complementary assets are better positioned to appropriate the rents from innovation. However, when companies lacked the required complementary assets, commercial success was contingent on locating centrally in commercial networks. Moreover, the findings also suggest that early R&D collaboration facilitates the formation of later commercial collaborative agreements. |
Abstract (fin): | Schumpeterin uraauurtavan tutkimustyön jälkeen innovaatioita on pidetty talouskasvun keskeisenä tekijänä. |
