Reading digital theses in the closed network of the Aalto University Harald Herlin Learning Centre

You can read theses on the Learning Centre customer computers, which are available on all floors.

Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): The thesis discussed mobile language learning and how to use ubiquitous knowledge of the environment as a source of learning material.
The target group were adult immigrants in Finland.
The literature part of the study examined mobile earning definitions, mobile language learning solutions, and immigrants' needs when it comes to language learning, and factors that factors that affect the design and success of a mobile learning solution.

The empirical part included the implementation of a mobile language learning solution and user experiments.
The implementation was a text-message-based vocabulary learning application, where the users were sent words taken from news headlines, along with their explanations and use examples, at a predefined time.
The implementation was first tested with pilot tests with a group 0 Finnish language students from Aalto University School of Science and Technology.
The final tests were performed with adult immigrants attending labour market training.

The results from final tests show that the language skill level of the test subjects clearly affects how useful they found the solution.
Those with better Finnish skills found the solution more useful than those whose Finnish skills were weaker.
The surprising part of the results was that the preferred place to read the text messages was at home and not, for example, in public transportation where the users would have access to free newspapers where the words in the messages were taken from.

This study is the first mobile language learning study where the target group were adult immigrants.
Hence the academic community and the public would benefit from further research done on the topic.
Abstract (fin): Tässä diplomityössä käsiteltiin mobiilia kielten oppimista ja kuinka ympäristön ubiikkia tietoa voitaisiin käyttää siinä hyväksi.
Tutkimuksen kohderyhmänä olivat aikuiset maahanmuuttajat Suomessa.
Diplomityön kirjallisuusosassa tarkasteltiin mobiilioppimisen määritelmiä, mobiilin kielten oppimisen sovelluksia, maahanmuuttajien tarpeita kielenoppimisen suhteen sekä tekijöitä, jotka vaikuttavat mobiilioppimissovelluksen kehittämiseen ja menestymiseen.

Työn kokeellinen osa sisälsi mobiilin kieltenoppimissovelluksen toteutuksen ja käyttäjätestit.
Toteutettu sovellus oli tekstiviestipohjainen sanastonoppimissovellus, jonka avulla käyttäjille lähetettiin tiettyyn kellonaikaan päivän uutisotsikoista otettuja sanoja sekä näiden selitykset ja esimerkkilause kunkin sanan käytöstä.
Toteutusta testattiin ensin pilottikokein Aalto-yliopiston teknillisen korkeakoulun suomen opiskelijoiden kanssa.
Lopullisissa kokeissa koeryhmänä oli työvoimapoliittisessa koulutuksessa olevia maahanmuuttajia.

Kokeiden tuloksista voitiin havaita, että koehenkilöiden suomen kielen taitotaso vaikutti selkeästi siihen, kuinka hyödylliseksi he kokivat sovelluksen.
Suomea paremmin taitavat arvioivat sovellukset olevan hyödyllisempi kuin ne, joiden suomen kielen taidot eivät olleet yhtä hyvät.
Yllättävää tuloksissa oli se, että tekstiviestit luettiin mieluiten kotona, eikä esimerkiksi julkisissa kulkuvälineissä, joissa on saatavilla ilmaisjakelulehtiä, joista tekstiviestien sanat oli otettu.

Tämä tutkimus oli mobiilin kieltenoppimisen saralla ensimmäinen, jossa kohderyhmänä olivat aikuiset maahanmuuttajat.
Näin ollen vastaavanlaisia tutkimuksia olisi hyödyllistä toteuttaa jatkossakin.
