Abstract (eng): The number of wireless broadband subscriptions and the amount of data transmitted in the network is increasing faster now than ever before.
Consequently, it has raised a need for continued innovations in wireless technologies to provide more capacity and higher quality of service.
ITU has defined requirements for the next generation mobile broadband technologies that will officially be certified as IMT-Advanced.
IMT-Advanced is expected to provide support for 100Mbps for high and 1Gbps for low mobility scenarios.

Two rival IMT-Advanced radio access technologies are 3GPP LTE-Advanced and IEEE 802.16m.
Both aim for a similar performance level and provide support for technical components such as carrier aggregation, multi-antenna enhancements and relays concepts.
However, from architectural and implementation aspects they differ a lot.
Overall, although the LTE-Advanced standard is expected to gain greater volume and become more widely deployed than 802.16m, both standards are expected to ultimately co-exist.

This thesis will explore IMT-Advanced technical requirements and study its two strongest candidate standards: LTE-Advanced and IEEE 802. 16m.
It will discuss the required technical improvements, standardization progress, and finally, the deployment plans.
Furthermore, this thesis evaluates and provides a brief comparison of the candidate standards.
